General and site-dependent factors in arteriosclerosis

By Søren Dalager.

The project concerns arteriosclerosis at different sites in the body. In connection with 100 medico-legal autopsies, coronary arteries, carotid arteries and femoral arteries were removed. This resulted in 48 vessel sections per autopsy which were coloured with various tissue and immunohistochemical stains and subsequently graded and measured using light-optical microscopy. Special emphasis will be on similarities and differences in the arteriosclerotic expression in the various arteries, and on the correlation with age, gender and cause of death. The project is due to be completed by the end of January 2007, and the defence is expected around May 2007. The project is carried out by doctor Søren Dalager; supervisors: Professor  Erling Falk, Department of Cardiology, Skejby Hospital, Professor  William Paaske, Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, Skejby Hospital, and Associate Professor Ingrid Bayer Kristensen, Department of Forensic Medicine.
